over 26,000 automobiles come through hillsboro village on 21st avenue. locals who travel it are well aware of the gridlock it creates everyday. metro public works has recently conducted studies in an effort to find ways to alleviate the congestion. one solution: acklen avenue. it dead ends shortly after the post office. if connected to magnolia, drivers would have another outlet, making it easier to get out of the village. metro council member burkley allen says drivers will only be able to enter and exit acklen on right turns only. installing a traffic light at acklen & magnolia to make it go through the current median is more cost prohibitive.
residents that live in the high rises and some local business owners think metro might be solving one problem and creating new ones with the added noise and loss of parking on that street.
metro public works will continue to conduct public hearings on the project to receive input, but if approved, the project could start in about 12 months.
