feeling hot hot hot…chicken

even with record breaking temps, nothing will slow down folks around east nashville from turning up the heat next week.  on chicken.  and it seems only fitting too that piedmont gas is the title sponsor again for the 2012 music city hot chicken festival.

it’s been named by gourmet magazine as one of america’s top 10 food festivals.  this year to further promote the event, the fest partnered with the nashville originals to bring hot chicken days: 30 ways to feel the burn.  leading up to the 4th of july festivities for the last month, more than 30 local area restaurants tipped their hats in their own unique ways to a dish our city has been known for for years but continues to gain notoriety.

in the south, we’re no strangers to spicy fried chicken and many local eateries have a take on the meal but when people around here think of true hot chicken, all roads lead back to the family of andre prince jeffries, owner of prince’s hot chicken.  she has operated the restaurant since 1980 but before that, her great uncle, thornton prince, was the owner.  legend is that thornton was a womanizer and after one late night out, a girlfriend made him chicken for breakfast but used extra hot pepper as revenge.  he liked it so much he was inspired to work up his own recipe and eventually served it in the restaurant.

so what was once served up in spitefulness, has become an annual event for our city that saw over 8,000 attendees last year.  the festival kicks off at 11am on wednesday the 4th and the first 500 people get free samples from prince’s hot chicken shack, 400 degrees, pepperfire chicken, smack your mama chicken & bolton’s spicy chicken & fish.  after the free foods are gone, go support the cause (festival proceeds benefit shelby park) and enjoy some hot chicken and cold drinks…and go home crying tears of joy.  not of retribution.

Where is smack ya mama located

    • Smack Your Mama used to be Chicken Shack out of Murfreesboro & was a 4-year participant in HCF. The storefront was closed in 2011 & they did not participate but they came back this year under the name Smack Your Mama and hope to open another store soon.

I have seen a sign for “Smack Your Mama” on Nolensville Pike close to Planet Fitness.
