6 picks to get excited about in the nations neighborhood

6picksthe west side has been blowing up lately.  the nations in particular.  a developer announced in february plans to build as many as 600 homes on a vacant, 36-acre industrial lot on centennial boulevard.  the whole neighborhood, just north of the ever-popular sylvan park, has been on the rise for awhile but now, the infrastructure for more walkability is shaping up.  restaurants & retailers are taking note and staking claim on their spots now.  here’s five in the works:

nashville’s john mcdougal is on schedule to open a craft beer bar in an old gas station in the nations.  aptly titled, the old gas station, it will offer 12 taps initially but will expand up to as many as 60.  although no wine or alcohol, it will offer a smoke free, dog-friendly covered patio with free wifi which makes up for that. growler fill will also be available.  the old gas station opens in july. | 5205 centennial blvd

the guys that brought 12 south taproom to life have confirmed plans to bring the nations 51st taproom.  location and details are still under wraps currently but plans are getting finalized with codes.  they plan to open early spring 2017.

the crew that opened fifty first kitchen last summer are all seeing the vision of the neighborhood and headed out to expand with new concepts separately.  duo tony and caroline galzin are opening nicky’s coal fired, italian cuisine which will include house-made pasta, charcuterie, and coal-fired oven baked dishes.  nickys opens this fall. | centennial + 51st avenue north

IMG_9553christy thurman, most recently a partner in successfully creating fifty first kitchen & wine bar, will always hold a soft place in my heart for creating rumours wine bar in 12 south back in the day.  up next, christy has two more nations concepts herself.  first up: nations bar & grill, a retro diner serving up american dishes all day. shooting to open late summer 2016. | 705 51st avenue north

and if you need more coffee options (because everyone needs options), red bicycle is headed to the nations as well.  it will be on the street level of an upcoming 3-story apartment building due late spring 2017. this will be their third location. | 51st avenue north + illinois
